Legendary producer Achilleas Theophilou dies aged 79

Achilleas Theophilou, one of the most influential figures in Greek music production, has died at the age of 79, leaving behind a profound legacy and a lasting imprint on modern Greek music.

Born and raised in Mytilene, Theophilou studied Political Science in Geneva and Sociology in Paris during the years of Greece’s military dictatorship. He returned to Athens in 1970 and joined Minos EMI, where he would become a defining force in the Greek music industry.

Over the decades, he worked with some of the greatest voices of Greek music, including Giorgos Dalaras, Antonis Vardis, Yiannis Parios, Stelios Kazantzidis, Nikos Xylouris, Mikis Theodorakis, and Manos Loizos. His contributions shaped the evolution of Greek music from the 1970s until his retirement in 2006.

Theophilou was also known for his personal life, having once been married to singer Haris Alexiou, with whom he had a son, Manos.

His passing has brought deep sorrow to the Greek music community, where he is remembered not only as a visionary producer, but also as a beloved figure and mentor.
