Lebanon: Only “official” forces allowed to carry guns in the country

Date:

The ceasefire proposal agreed upon by Lebanon and Israel stipulates that only “official forces, military and security,” in Lebanon will be allowed to carry weapons in the country, according to a copy of the agreement dated yesterday and obtained by Reuters today.

The agreement specifically names these forces as the Lebanese Armed Forces, Internal Security Forces, General Security, State Security, Lebanese Customs, and municipal police.

Officials from both the Lebanese government and the Iranian-backed Lebanese Shia movement Hezbollah have long referred to cabinet statements from 2008 that enshrine the right to “resistance,” claiming these statements provide official approval for Hezbollah’s arsenal.

The agreed ceasefire proposal also highlights both sides’ commitment to fully implement United Nations Security Council Resolution 1701, including its provisions on the “disarmament of all armed groups in Lebanon.”

Hezbollah has not officially commented on the ceasefire, but a senior member, Hassan Fadlallah, told Lebanon’s Al Jadeed TV late on Tuesday that while the Shia organisation supports the extension of the Lebanese state’s authority, Hezbollah would emerge stronger from the war.

“Thousands will join the resistance (…) The disarmament of the resistance was an Israeli proposal that failed,” noted Fadlallah, who is also a member of the Lebanese parliament.
