Lavrov: The Ukraine plan must reflect the Trump–Putin meeting

Date:

A revised peace plan for Ukraine must reflect the meeting between Russian President Vladimir Putin and U.S. President Donald Trump in Alaska, Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov said today.

During a press conference in Moscow, Lavrov noted that Russia had welcomed the initial version of the American peace plan for Ukraine — a draft Kyiv and its allies viewed as overly favorable to Moscow, according to Reuters — but now expects a revised “temporary” version once Washington completes its coordination with Ukraine and Europe.

Lavrov warned that if the updated version fails to reflect what Putin and Trump discussed at their August meeting in Alaska, Russia will see the initiative very differently. Reuters reported that Russian representatives appear ready for further talks with the United States later today in Abu Dhabi.

“Our assessment still stands, because the core elements of Trump’s initial plan were based on the understanding reached in Anchorage during the Russian-American summit in August. These principles appear overall in the plan, and we welcomed them,” Lavrov emphasized.

The initial proposal permanently blocked Ukraine from joining NATO, capped its military at 600,000 troops, suggested handing the remaining Donbas territory to Russia — as a demilitarized zone — and required Kyiv to hold elections within 100 days.

According to Reuters, all these provisions have since been revised or temporarily set aside.

Lavrov also stated that Russia does not pressure Washington to rush, but hopes the U.S. will share the latest interim text once it is ready.

“If the spirit and the letter of Anchorage disappear from the core understanding we reached then, the situation for Russia will fundamentally change,” Lavrov cautioned.
