Officer detained under court warrant

A Larnaca policeman arrested on Friday is being investigated over serious allegations involving a detainee, according to an official police announcement.

Members of the Internal Affairs Service proceeded with the arrest under a court warrant. The officer serves at the Larnaca Police Directorate.

Multiple serious offences under investigation

The Larnaca policeman who was arrested is being investigated for a number of offences, including abuse of power, fraud and breach of trust by a public official, neglect of duty, disobedience to laws imposing duties, and bribery of a public official.

Additional offences under investigation include violations related to corruption under the Prevention of Corruption Law, unlawful transactions suggesting corruption, breach of official secrecy, and the illicit acquisition of financial benefit.

Alleged incident in police holding cells

According to the information under examination, the incident in question occured while carrying out guard duty at police holding cells.

The officer allegedly gave his personal mobile phone to a 48-year-old Cypriot national whilst executing guard duty at Larnaca Police Station cells.

The detainee, alleged to be the head of a criminal group that demanded protection money from a businessman on Grigori Afxentiou Avenue, made a number of calls using the phone. The officer is believed to have provided the phone on more than one occasion.

The case is being investigated by the Cyprus Police, with inquiries continuing.
