Police are investigating a case involving negligent and reckless acts following the injury of two men, aged 32 and 38, in a fire that broke out while they were refuelling their car at a petrol station in the Larnaca district on the night of August 28, 2026. The 38-year-old was arrested as part of the investigation, which is continuing by Kofinou Regional Police Station.
At around 11:45 p.m. on August 28, the two men went to a petrol station in the Larnaca district in the 32-year-old’s car to refuel. According to evidence under investigation, while the 38-year-old was standing near the fuel pump, he lit a lighter, causing an ignition and subsequent fire.
Nearby residents extinguished the fire using a fire extinguisher. The blaze caused damage to the 32-year-old’s car and the fuel pump.
Police and Fire Service officers attended the scene, along with an ambulance crew, which transported both men to Larnaca General Hospital.
Medical examinations found that the 32-year-old had suffered a superficial burn to his left hand. He received treatment and was discharged. The 38-year-old suffered second- and third-degree burns to his legs and right hand and was transferred to Nicosia General Hospital for treatment. However, on the morning of August 29, he was discharged at his own request.
Later that day, at around 3:30 p.m., the 38-year-old went to Larnaca Airport intending to fly to the country where he permanently resides. Police officers at the airport arrested him under a court warrant issued as part of the investigation.
Following his arrest, due to the severity of his injuries, the 38-year-old was transferred back to Nicosia General Hospital, where he was admitted to the Burns Intensive Care Unit. His condition is not life-threatening.
