Larnaca: Caravans removed and illegal shacks demolished

Date:

Authorities have carried out a large-scale operation to remove illegal caravans from two beaches, following an ultimatum issued by the Ministry of the Interior and the Larnaca District Administration.

The latest operation took place on Thursday morning at the beach near the former Larnaca oil refinery site, where crews from the District Administration and Larnaca Municipality moved to restore public access and remove illegal structures.

The action follows Tuesday’s operation at the beach next to the Larnaca Nautical Club.

Most owners complied

On Saturday, authorities recorded around 18 caravans at the Nautical Club beach.

Following the ultimatum issued last weekend after intervention by the Interior Minister and the Larnaca District Administration, around 12 owners voluntarily removed their caravans.

During Tuesday’s operation, crews removed the remaining six caravans that had stayed on the site, transporting them away on specialised recovery platforms.

According to the authorities, the owners will face administrative fines, which must be paid before they can reclaim their caravans.

Illegal structures demolished

On Thursday, crews from Larnaca Municipality and the District Administration also removed three additional caravans from the beach near the former refinery and dismantled around nine illegal sheds and makeshift structures that had been erected on the shoreline.

Authorities said the structures had altered the natural environment and occupied public space without permission.

Measures to prevent repeat incidents

Officials said additional measures have been introduced to prevent the illegal occupation of beaches from recurring.

They added that inspections will continue to ensure free public access to beaches, protect public land and preserve the coastal environment.
