Power cuts affected several areas of Cyprus on Wednesday, as electricity demand surged during extreme temperatures.
According to Electricity Authority of Cyprus (EAC) spokesperson Christina Papadopoulou, the outages were mainly caused by ageing power generators at the Dhekelia Power Station.
She explained that exceptionally high demand, driven by the ongoing heatwave, has placed significant pressure on electricity production. As a result, rotating power cuts are being implemented to balance supply across the network.
Extreme heat drives electricity demand
Papadopoulou noted that demand for electricity generation has increased worldwide due to the extreme temperatures, placing additional strain on energy systems.
She said the power cuts are being carried out on a rotating basis, with different groups of consumers affected at different times to help maintain the stability of the electricity grid.
Critical services excluded
The EAC said essential infrastructure will continue to be excluded from the rotating outages.
Hospitals and other critical facilities will remain protected while the power cuts are implemented in affected areas.
