Larnaca: 48-year-old suspect rearrested; torture video uncovered

Date:

Police arrested two individuals as part of ongoing operations targeting serious and organised crime in the city and district of Larnaca.

The suspects include a 48-year-old remand prisoner currently held in the Central Prisons and a 27-year-old man. The Larnaca Criminal Investigation Department has continued enquiries since July 2025 following the solving of serious cases and the arrest of organised crime members, seeking further evidence linked to criminal networks.

Serious offences under investigation

According to CID Larnaca chief Giorgos Charalambous, investigators secured testimony against the 48-year-old for multiple offences. These include conspiracy to commit a felony, conspiracy to commit a misdemeanour, illegal possession and transport of a firearm, knife possession, and acts intended to cause grievous bodily harm allegedly committed in Larnaca district during 2025.

Authorities also arrested the 27-year-old man of Arab origin for the same offences, while a third individual of Arab origin remains wanted. The suspect is also linked to the incident that occurred on 17 January 2026 on Grigori Afxentiou Avenue in Larnaca.

Evidence and court proceedings

Police searched premises connected to the 48-year-old suspect and seized evidence for evaluation. Both detainees are expected to appear before the Larnaca District Court to request detention orders.

Video material discovered on the 48-year-old’s mobile phone introduced new developments in the wider investigation into organised crime. Investigators identified numerous videos and photographs allegedly showing at least seven individuals subjected to severe torture.

Footage reportedly shows victims being beaten with hands and objects, while in two instances a firearm appears to be forced into a victim’s mouth as the person was held against their will.

Investigators also identified the suspected torture location as a first-floor room in a casino that had operated in Pyla and is believed to be connected to the 48-year-old. In another video, a victim appears seated on a sofa while the suspect, holding a gold-coloured pistol and a knife, demands money before striking and spitting at the victim.

Police are investigating numerous offences believed to have occurred on different dates in 2025. A third suspect remains wanted. Authorities have already secured eight-day detention orders for the two suspects in custody.
