Interior Ministry: Land registry prepares new Cyprus map

Date:

The Cartography Branch of the Department of Lands and Surveys is preparing the new Administrative Map of Cyprus, which arises from the Local Government reform taking effect on July 1, 2024, under the direction of Interior Ministry Director General Elikkos Elias. Speaking to CNA, Elias stated that a draft of the map will be shared with the Union of Municipalities, the Union of Communities, and other stakeholders for feedback.

When asked by CNA about potential weaknesses in the new Administrative Map, Elias acknowledged that “studying the new administrative map reveals apparent weaknesses, such as municipalities with small land areas and populations, as well as the creation of municipal districts formed from rural communities with minimal populations.”

“We have also managed,” Elias continued, “to administratively divide the Akamas National Park, incorporating it into two different municipalities.”

“However, this is our new Administrative Map, and we are obligated to work within its framework and collaborate for the better service and welfare of citizens,” he emphasized.

Elias added that the Ministry of Interior has a duty to deliver the new Administrative Map of Cyprus to the Ministry of Education so that it becomes familiar to future generations.

Furthermore, the Director General noted that “a cluster of communities in Nicosia, two in Paphos, and two in Larnaca have yet to agree on their name.” He added that “the Ministry of Interior will continue its efforts to help them reach a decision.”

He also mentioned that a name change for the Municipality of Polis Chrysochous is currently underway.

Additionally, Elias stated that he would propose a name change for the cluster “Agia Anna-Kalo Chorio-Mosfiloti-Pyrga-Psevdas in Larnaca District,” suggesting that a shorter name could be found.
