The port of Kyrenia, in the illegally occupied areas of Cyprus, one of the main entry points into the pseudostate and a hub for tourism and trade, has in recent weeks descended into chaos. Staff shortages, poor maintenance, infrastructure problems and a lack of coordination among authorities have led to serious disruption for passengers and professionals.
According to Turkish Cypriot media, long queues form at immigration counters because there are too few staff to cope with the increased number of travellers, especially when two ships dock at the same time. Waiting areas are described as outdated and dirty, with insufficient air conditioning, a lack of seating, and toilets in appalling condition.

Vehicle transport has also been affected. Customs checks face long delays, traffic congestion builds up from lorries, and staff shortages create further dysfunction. The absence of proper cooperation between the “Port Authority”, “Police”, “Customs” and “Immigration Department” only adds to the difficulties.

Reports note that instead of projecting a positive image of the island, the current situation damages its international reputation. The aim, they stress, is not to criticise staff, but to highlight the problems and push for solutions such as more personnel, modern facilities, proper hygiene, and better coordination.
