Justice and Public Order Minister Kostas Fytiris sought to reassure the public over the regional crisis, saying Cyprus remains safe despite the war involving Iran, the United States and Israel.
In an interview with Phileleftheros, Fytiris said the situation in the Middle East is serious and is being closely monitored, while security authorities remain on constant alert.
He stressed that the absence of terrorist attacks in Cyprus is not accidental, but the result of preventive work by the Cyprus Police and other security services. He also noted that diplomatic initiatives by President Nikos Christodoulides led to the deployment of surveillance and deterrence assets by European partners, strengthening the island’s security.
The minister also sent a strong message against organised crime, saying intimidation and mafia style practices have no place in a law governed state.
At the same time, he revealed that preparations for a specialised unit to combat organised crime, often referred to as a “Cypriot FBI,” are at the final stage.
Fytiris also announced reforms in the prison system, rejecting temporary fixes and confirming plans for a new modern correctional facility outside urban areas, as well as separate detention facilities for minors.
