AKEL MP and deputy chair of the parliamentary transport committee Kostas Kostas described the ongoing confusion surrounding the Takata airbag recalls in Cyprus as “unacceptable” and “desperate”, with thousands of vehicle owners struggling to book appointments for inspections or replacements.
Speaking to the Protoselido programme, Kostas said: “It’s outrageous what’s happening. Instead of holding accountable those responsible — whether public servants, state officials or dealerships — we’ve put over 100,000 vehicle owners in this desperate position, begging for an appointment for an inspection and then to replace their airbag.”
He noted that there is a shortage of replacement parts despite high demand, and that drivers cannot find available appointments, leaving many vehicles immobilised. “These people, 99% of them, did not ignore the decree. They are people begging for an appointment for months,” he said.
‘The state neither helps nor protects citizens’
Kostas added that the state is failing to support or protect citizens, stressing that if a vehicle involved in the Takata recall is in an accident, insurance companies cannot cover the driver, leaving them legally exposed. The issue, he said, affects many vulnerable citizens who depend on their cars.
He also criticised ongoing illegal charges related to the recall process and condemned the government’s overall handling of the matter.
The Takata airbag recalls in Cyprus continue to cause frustration, with thousands still waiting for replacements amid parts shortages and limited service availability.
