Iran’s supreme leader Mojtaba Khamenei has said that countries in the region will no longer serve as “shields” for US military bases, in a statement carried by state media.
In a written message marking Eid al-Adha, Khamenei said “time does not go back” and argued that regional territories would no longer be used to protect American military installations.
The remarks were reported by the Iranian state broadcaster amid ongoing geopolitical friction across the Middle East.
US described as losing regional position
Khamenei further stated that the United States is losing influence in the region and no longer has safe bases for launching operations.
He added that US power is “moving further away with each passing day”, reflecting Tehran’s increasingly confrontational rhetoric.
Talks continue despite tensions
The comments come as Iran and the United States continue indirect exchanges aimed at reaching a possible agreement to end ongoing regional hostilities.
Iran’s Foreign Ministry said that progress has been made on several issues in discussions with Washington, but stressed that a final deal is not imminent.
A ceasefire has been in place since 8 April, although tensions remain high across the region.
Regional conflict background
The current conflict, which began on 28 February, has spread across multiple fronts in the Middle East, involving Iran, Israel, and US-aligned states.
Negotiations continue over sensitive issues including security arrangements, sanctions relief and Iran’s nuclear programme, with no final settlement yet reached.
