Greek Deputy Minister of National Defence Giannis Kefalogiannis visited the headquarters of the Hellenic Force in Cyprus (ELDYK) on Wednesday, where he was welcomed by Commander Colonel (Infantry) Asterios Despoudis. He referred to ELDYK as a symbol of the “unbreakable bond” between Greece and Cyprus.
According to a statement from the Greek Ministry of National Defence, Mr. Kefalogiannis was briefed on the organisation, mission, and current operational activities of ELDYK and toured the Military Headquarters, the War Museum, and the camp facilities.
He then visited the 2nd Mechanised Infantry Battalion of ELDYK at the “Andreas Zakos” Camp, where he toured the facilities and observed a firing demonstration by a Mechanised Infantry Team using a Shooting Simulator.
The Deputy Minister thanked the personnel for their dedication, sacrifice, and professionalism, conveying the full support of the political and military leadership of the Greek Armed Forces. He emphasised that ELDYK is a symbol of the strong bond between Greece and Cyprus, rooted in shared heritage, history, values, and struggles. He also reiterated Greece’s commitment to achieving a fair and sustainable resolution to the Cyprus issue, based on a bizonal, bicommunal federation in line with UN Security Council resolutions and the European acquis.
“It is a great honour to be here today among you, the guardians of our Cyprus. At the same time, I feel deeply moved standing on this land of heroes, where duty, history, and the honour of our homeland converge. Every inch of this ground reminds us of the sacrifices, struggles, and bloodshed for freedom, independence, and national dignity. From its establishment to today, ELDYK has been a symbol of the unbreakable bond between Greece and Cyprus, a bond based on shared heritage, history, values, and struggles,” the Deputy Minister said in his address to the personnel and soldiers.
Later, Mr. Kefalogiannis participated in a working lunch with Cyprus Minister of Defence Vasilis Palmas.
