An Israeli has described a month-long ordeal following his detention in the occupied north of Cyprus in connection with the transport of fertilised embryos without the required export authorisation.
The 24-year-old, identified as Israel Meir Gotthold, was released from custody in the occupied areas after being arrested at an airport while transporting a container with fertilised embryos as part of a professional assignment.
Dispute over export authorisation
According to his statements to Israeli media, Gotthold had been tasked with transporting fertilised embryos aged two to three days for a company specialising in international transport of genetic material for IVF and surrogacy programmes.
Upon arrival at the airport in the occupied areas, customs officials reportedly found that the required export permit from the “health ministry” of the self-declared authorities had not been issued.
Although the permit was reportedly issued two days later, he remained in custody, while a doctor and a fertility clinic director involved in handing over the embryos were also detained.
Claims of harsh detention conditions
Gotthold claims he endured extremely difficult conditions during his detention, including overcrowded cells, poor-quality food and threats from fellow inmates.
He also alleged that he was physically abused by a prison officer and spent 11 days in solitary confinement in a small cell due to concerns over his safety.
According to his account, some Turkish media reports described the case as “embryo smuggling”, which he says contributed to a hostile environment inside the detention facility.
Release and legal considerations
The case concluded after a court ordered his immediate release, reportedly finding no criminal intent and that he had acted in line with international regulations governing the transport of biological material.
Following his release, he crossed to the free areas via Larnaca and said he only felt truly free upon leaving detention.
The 24-year-old is now considering legal action seeking compensation for his detention and the conditions he alleges he experienced.
