Israeli Navy intercepts aid flotilla
The Israeli Navy has launched operations to block the progress of the Global Sumud Flotilla, a group of activists sailing towards the Gaza Strip in an attempt to challenge Israel’s naval blockade and deliver humanitarian aid.
Reports say that Gaza flotilla interception operations included the boarding of at least one vessel by Israeli naval commandos in international waters near Cyprus.
Warnings issued before interception
Israel had previously warned participants in the flotilla to change course and return immediately, describing the mission as unauthorised.
Footage circulating online appears to show Israeli naval personnel boarding one of the vessels at sea during the flotilla interception operation.
Flotilla claims contact lost
The Global Flotilla organisation said that two warships were seen near its vessels in the Mediterranean Sea, adding that contact was lost with one of the boats after it came under what it described as harassment by Israeli forces.
Organisers said the convoy was carrying a symbolic amount of humanitarian aid intended for Gaza.
Israel questions purpose of mission
Israeli authorities have previously described such flotillas as “media stunts”, arguing that aid should be handed over to Israel or international organisations for authorised delivery into Gaza through official channels.
Ongoing blockade policy
The Gaza flotilla interception comes within the framework of Israel’s long-standing naval blockade of the Gaza Strip, which authorities say is necessary for security reasons.
Critics argue the blockade severely restricts humanitarian access to the territory.
