Iran’s missile strike on Diego Garcia
The British government confirmed on Saturday that Iran launched an unsuccessful missile attack on Diego Garcia, a joint U.S.-U.K. military base in the Indian Ocean. Reports said Tehran fired two ballistic missiles at the base but both missed.
UK military readiness
A U.K. defense ministry spokesperson said Iran’s actions threaten British interests and allies. The Royal Air Force and other UK military assets are maintaining defensive operations in the region. The UK has also authorised limited US use of British bases for defensive operations, including RAF Fairford and Diego Garcia.
Range and threats
The strike marked Iran’s longest-range attack since US and Israeli operations began in late February. Israel claims Iran possesses missiles capable of reaching London, Paris, and Berlin, though UK officials say there is no current assessment supporting these claims. Communities Secretary Steve Reed confirmed the UK is capable of defending against any potential missile threat.
Ongoing regional escalation
The attack on Diego Garcia comes amid a broader escalation between Iran, Israel, and the US. Fresh exchanges of attacks occurred on Saturday, and the US is reportedly sending additional Marines to the Middle East even as President Donald Trump considers scaling down operations.
