Iranian media name RAF Akrotiri among potential targets of retaliation

Date:

The Akrotiri air base in Cyprus has been included among potential targets of Iranian retaliation in the event of further military escalation, according to reports in Iranian media.

The Tehran municipality-owned newspaper Hamshahri published a map on its front page identifying military installations in nine European countries, including Cyprus, Greece, the UK, Germany, France and Italy.

The publication claims that the list of potential targets for Iran’s armed forces is being revised without geographical restrictions.

The British air base at Akrotiri is specifically mentioned because of its role in reconnaissance, surveillance and military support operations in the Eastern Mediterranean and the Middle East.

Iran media describe European facilities as potential targets

The newspaper argues that military infrastructure in Europe used to support US operations could be considered legitimate targets by Iran in the event of a major escalation.

Conservative Iranian newspaper Kayhan also published similar references, naming Cyprus and Greece among the countries where American or NATO facilities could potentially be targeted.

However, these references represent reports and assessments published by Iranian media outlets and do not constitute an official announcement by the Iranian state.

The reports come hours after renewed US strikes against Iranian military targets in the area of the Strait of Hormuz.

Cyprus previously said it was not an Iranian target

The latest reference to Akrotiri comes after the Republic of Cyprus issued reassurances last August, following similar reports about a possible threat against the island.

At the time, the government said it maintained open communication channels with Tehran and that Cyprus was not considered a target by Iran.

The latest developments also coincide with statements made on Wednesday by Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian in support of strengthening bilateral relations with Cyprus.

Iranian president calls for closer ties with Cyprus

According to Iranian news agency Mehr, Pezeshkian made the remarks during the presentation of credentials by Cyprus’ new ambassador to Iran.

He referred to the historical ties between the two countries, saying that the current level of bilateral relations and cooperation did not reflect either their historical background or their existing potential.

He stressed the need for joint efforts and political will to develop relations across all sectors, expressing hope that the new Cypriot ambassador’s tenure would contribute to substantially strengthening bilateral cooperation.

Commenting on international developments, Pezeshkian also emphasised the importance of peaceful coexistence and constructive dialogue.

He said people should not devote themselves to wars, aggression and the imposition of power instead of pursuing cooperation and mutual understanding.
