Iran warns it will target US sites and bases if attacked

Date:

Iran has accused the United States of threatening the use of force, calling it a “blatant violation” of the UN Charter and international law that could push the region into a new cycle of crisis and instability.

In a letter to the UN Secretary-General and the President of the Security Council, Iran’s Permanent Representative Amir Saeid Iravani cited a public statement by the US President suggesting the possible use of Diego Garcia and Fairford air base if Iran refused to reach an agreement.

Warning of military escalation

Tehran said the statement should not be seen as mere rhetoric, given the continued movement and build-up of military assets, and warned of a real risk of military aggression with “catastrophic” consequences for the region and serious threats to international peace and security.

Iran said it remains committed to the purposes and principles of the UN Charter and to diplomatic solutions, stressing that it has engaged constructively and in good faith in nuclear talks with Washington. It said it seeks the full and verifiable lifting of what it called illegal and inhumane unilateral coercive measures and a mutually acceptable, results-oriented solution consistent with recognised rights under the Non-Proliferation Treaty.

Call to the Security Council

Iran urged the Security Council to ensure that the US immediately ceases what it described as illegal threats of force and complies with Article 2(4) of the UN Charter. It warned against the normalisation of threats and acts of aggression.

Response to any attack

Tehran said it does not seek escalation or war and will not initiate conflict, but warned it would respond decisively and proportionally under Article 51 of the UN Charter if attacked. It said all bases, facilities and assets of hostile forces in the region would become legitimate targets, with the US bearing full responsibility for any consequences.

The letter concluded that the United States would bear “full and immediate responsibility for any unforeseen and uncontrollable consequences.”
