Iran executions: UN reports 21 deaths, 4,000 arrests

Date:

Iran executions have surged since the start of the war in the Middle East, with the United Nations reporting at least 21 people executed and more than 4,000 arrests.

According to the UN, the figures cover the period since late February, when US and Israeli strikes triggered the ongoing conflict.

Executions linked to protests and opposition

The UN Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights stated that at least nine individuals were executed in connection with protests that took place in January 2026.

A further ten people were executed for alleged involvement in opposition groups, while two others faced execution on espionage charges.

The report noted that since 28 February, more than 4,000 individuals have been detained across Iran on charges related to national security.

These developments come amid heightened tensions and internal unrest, as authorities tighten control during wartime conditions.

Growing concern over human rights

The rise in executions in Iran has intensified international concern over human rights conditions in the country.

The UN has repeatedly called for restraint and respect for due process, particularly in cases involving political dissent and protest-related charges.

The situation continues to evolve as the conflict in the region shows no immediate signs of resolution.
