Interior Ministry on standby, monitoring developments

Date:

Cyprus’ Interior Ministry said on Monday it is closely monitoring developments regarding the situation in the region and, within the framework of the “ESTIA” national plan and in coordination with all competent services, stands ready to contribute with all available means.

Civil Defence crews remain on site in the Akrotiri Municipal District following the attack by an unmanned drone on the British Bases in the Akrotiri area. Their presence aims to inform residents and assist with the transfer of individuals who wish to move to temporary accommodation areas. Patrols are also being carried out in the area to provide assistance where required.

In an official announcement, the Ministry said that due to the tense and volatile situation in the region, precautionary instructions are being issued should the need arise.

According to the announcement, immediately after the drone attack on the British Bases in the Akrotiri area of the Municipality of Kourion, the Civil Defence Force was activated and units were dispatched to support residents.

In consultation with the Mayor of Kourion, the Deputy Mayor of Akrotiri and the Administration of the British Bases, Civil Defence informed residents that accommodation could be provided at the Limassol military recruitment facility (KEN), if necessary.

Precautionary instructions to the public

The Ministry stated that, due to the ongoing volatile situation, sirens will sound in affected areas if required, while announcements will be broadcast via radio, television and other media to direct the public to the nearest shelter.

Shelters can be located through the “SafeCY” application or by contacting the Civil Defence Headquarters Operations Centre at 22403451 or 22403452.

If no shelter is nearby, citizens are advised to remain in a safe indoor location within their home or workplace, such as underground parking areas or spaces with solid walls. Remaining indoors is preferable to staying outdoors.

Trained neighbourhood guards will be deployed at points of increased need to assist and guide members of the public.

Civil Defence further reminds the public that if no shelter is accessible, they should position themselves inside their home away from windows, doors and glass panels for protection. Citizens are urged to remain calm and follow instructions issued by the competent authorities.

Members of the public are also advised to identify their nearest shelter in advance and prepare an emergency kit containing essential items, including water, dry food, first aid supplies, a torch, batteries, a radio, medicines, important documents, some cash and baby food if required.

The Interior Ministry reiterated that it continues to monitor developments within the framework of the “ESTIA” National Action Plan, which is activated in cases of emergency or crisis to facilitate the safe evacuation of civilians from nearby crisis areas in the wider Middle East region through the Republic of Cyprus.
