The installation of smart water meters in Larnaca begins today, Friday 10 October, starting from the Livadia municipal district, with priority given to areas experiencing high water losses.
According to an announcement by the Larnaca District Organisation of Local Government (EΟA Larnaca), the first phase of the project will cover the area between the Livadia Municipal Stadium and the Church of Agios Savvas.
By June 2026, the installation and operation of an automated water consumption recording system is expected to be completed. This includes replacing at least 25,000 household water meters with smart meters capable of recording and transmitting hourly water usage data to a dedicated monitoring platform.
The smart water meters in Larnaca will be installed in areas with high water loss or operational issues, particularly in Aradippou, Livadia, and commercial zones of Larnaca with heavy consumption. In a later stage, EOAL plans to expand installation to other areas under its jurisdiction.
Authorities say this strategic project will enable daily calculation of each area’s water balance, early detection of leaks in distribution networks, improved water management efficiency, and a reduction in non-revenue water.
Consumers will also benefit from online monitoring of their property’s water consumption via a dedicated platform, early leak detection, and a reduced risk of overcharging caused by undetected water loss.
The project is co-financed by the EU’s Recovery and Resilience Facility under the NextGenerationEU programme, as part of Cyprus’s national Recovery and Resilience Plan, along with EOAL’s own resources.
