4-year-old dies from multiple organ failure caused by influenza A

Date:

OKYpY spokesperson Charalambos Charilaou appeared on “Protoselido”, warning about the rise in infections and mounting pressure on public hospitals, especially in Limassol. He confirmed the influenza A death of a 4-year-old girl, caused by complications.

Child transferred in critical condition

The case involved a young girl whom doctors urgently moved from Limassol General Hospital to Makarios Hospital. Medical staff admitted her intubated and in critical condition to the Intensive Care Unit.

Despite intensive treatment, she died. Doctors determined multiple organ failure as the cause of death and confirmed that the girl had contracted influenza A.

Limassol hospitals see increased admissions

Mr Charilaou noted that Limassol hospitals experienced higher patient flow in Accident and Emergency Departments over the weekend and recorded more hospital admissions.

He said influenza A cases among inpatients rose from 14 to 25, with 11 new admissions, while COVID-19 cases increased from one to five. Other districts have not yet seen a similar trend, but Mr Charilaou warned that case numbers could rise elsewhere in the coming days.

Athalassa Hospital faces long-standing building issues

At Athalassa Hospital, Mr Charilaou highlighted serious building problems. He said the current facilities cannot safely accommodate patients.

He added that since 2019, OKYpY has planned a new hospital. The first phase, which includes acute care wards and the Detoxification Unit, is already underway, and the second phase is in progress.

Officials implement patient relocation plan

A recent study by experts identified high-risk conditions in the existing buildings. OKYpY developed a plan to move patients to safer facilities.

Mr Charilaou said the Health Minister approved the plan, and staff are already implementing it. Their goal is to relocate all patients quickly while protecting staff and patient safety.

He added that timelines are tight. Transfers happen immediately where possible, and minor delays may occur when technical adjustments are needed, but authorities have already initiated all necessary actions.
