House President Annita Demetriou, reaffirmed on Tuesday Cyprus’ commitment to respecting international law, during a meeting with Lebanese Ambassador to Cyprus, Claude El Hajal.
According to an announcement by the House of Representatives, Demetriou noted that Cyprus, as country, that still suffers from the Turkish invasion and illegal occupation, which continues for 50 years in part of its territory and therefore “remains steadfast in its committed to respecting international law and the relevant UN resolutions in all cases of infringement, without exception.”
Demetriou and El Hajal also spoke of the situation in the Middle East, with the House President expressing hope for de-escalation, in order to prevail conditions of lasting peace and stability to the benefit of the people. El Hajal responded by expressing her hope for a successful outcome in ongoing efforts for brokering a ceasefire and thanked Cyprus for the support to the people of Lebanon and for accommodating Lebanese who turned to Cyprus for refuge.
