US calls for naval deployment
Tensions in the Middle East are intensifying, with the strategic Strait of Hormuz emerging as a new flashpoint. Former US President Donald Trump has once again urged Western countries to deploy warships to the area, citing the need to safeguard maritime security.
The call has heightened Hormuz tensions, as Washington pushes for a stronger military presence in one of the world’s most critical energy transit routes.
EU rejects involvement
The European Union responded swiftly, making clear it does not support any form of military involvement in the conflict. European leaders stressed the importance of avoiding further escalation.
German Chancellor Friedrich Merz underscored this position, stating that “this war does not concern NATO,” signalling a clear divergence from the US stance on Hormuz tensions and broader regional engagement.
War enters 17th day with wider escalation
The conflict has now entered its 17th day, with the Middle East facing a sharp escalation. Missile strikes, ground operations, and attacks on critical infrastructure are contributing to a rapidly deteriorating security landscape extending beyond Iran and Israel.
According to latest reports, Iran launched strikes targeting the largest port in the United Arab Emirates, while sirens sounded again in Tel Aviv and other Israeli cities.
New fronts and rising casualties
At the same time, the Israeli military announced a new operation in southern Lebanon, opening an additional front in the conflict.
Israeli media reported that Iranian missiles or debris struck the area of Beit Shemesh, near Jerusalem. The extent of damage remains unclear, and no immediate casualties have been confirmed.
Meanwhile, US and Israeli forces continue airstrikes inside Iran, targeting Tehran, Shiraz in the south, and Tabriz in the northwest. Iranian sources report hits on civilian infrastructure, including a school and an oil facility, with at least five people reported dead.
