UK warship leaves Akrotiri
The British destroyer HMS Dragon has been withdrawn from Cyprus to a Mediterranean port due to a technical issue affecting its water supply system, UK officials confirmed.
The vessel had been deployed to strengthen defences at the Akrotiri base following a recent drone attack. Its temporary withdrawal reduces the UK’s operational presence at a critical time in the region.
UK says readiness remains high
Despite the setback, the UK Ministry of Defence stressed that the warship remains on high alert and can be redeployed at short notice if required.
A government spokesperson said HMS Dragon is undergoing a routine logistics stop and a short maintenance period in the eastern Mediterranean, allowing it to resupply, optimise systems and carry out necessary repairs.
Officials added that the ship would remain at a very high level of readiness throughout this period.
Continued UK military presence in region
The UK government emphasised that it continues to maintain a strong and layered defence presence in the eastern Mediterranean, working closely with allies.
This includes Typhoon and F-35 fighter jets, as well as Wildcat and Merlin helicopters, supported by advanced air defence systems.
The temporary absence of HMS Dragon’s Cyprus operations is not expected to significantly impact overall defensive capabilities in the region.
