Heavy rain hits Paphos as river overflow closes road

Date:

A storm warning remains in force as heavy rain and thunderstorms affect parts of the island, with flooding reported and a road closed due to a river overflow.

Paphos, Limassol and Larnaca are among the areas experiencing severe weather. Heavy rainfall has reduced visibility in Pissouri, while the road between Peyia and Lara has become impassable because of a river overflowing, according to police.

Drivers have been urged to avoid the affected route and take extra care on the road network.

Road closed after river overflows

Police said the Peyia–Lara road is unsuitable for vehicle traffic because of the overflowing river.

Authorities have advised motorists not to attempt to cross roads covered by accumulated water or affected by overflowing rivers. Drivers should follow instructions from the relevant authorities and remain alert as conditions may deteriorate.

Heavy rain in the Pissouri area has also reduced visibility. Police are urging drivers to reduce speed, keep a safe distance from vehicles ahead and switch on their headlights.

Orange warning extended until Thursday morning

The Meteorology Department has issued updated orange warning No. 67 for severe thunderstorms, with rainfall intensity expected to reach between 55 and 70 millimetres per hour.

The warning came into effect at 3pm on Wednesday, October 14, and remains valid until 5am on Thursday, October 15.

A low-pressure system accompanied by strong thunderstorms is affecting Cyprus. Winds are expected to be variable, with strong gusts, while hail is also possible.

Authorities have urged the public to remain cautious, particularly in areas experiencing intense rainfall where flooding could make roads dangerous.
