Heavy rain, hail and force 9 winds to hit

Date:

Low pressure combined with a relatively cold air mass is affecting weather in Cyprus, bringing localised rain, isolated thunderstorms and snowfall over the higher peaks of Troodos.

Winds are particularly strong, reaching up to 9 Beaufort in exposed areas, creating challenging conditions both inland and along the coast.

Rain, storms and snowfall expected

Today, skies remain mostly cloudy with localised showers and isolated thunderstorms, mainly affecting the western half of the island. Conditions will gradually improve later in the afternoon.

Hail may fall during thunderstorms, while snowfall is expected over the highest peaks of Troodos. Winds will blow from south-westerly to north-westerly directions, strong to very strong inland at 5 to 6 Beaufort, and up to 7 Beaufort along the coast, with gusts reaching 8 to 9 Beaufort in some areas.

As the day progresses, winds will ease slightly but remain strong to very strong at 5 to 6 Beaufort. The sea will be rough. Temperatures will rise to 18°C inland, around 19°C on the coast and 8°C in the higher mountains.

Cool night with possible frost

Tonight, periods of increased cloud cover may bring isolated showers. Winds will ease to light to moderate at 3 to 4 Beaufort, while the sea remains slightly rough, initially locally rough.

Temperatures will drop to 8°C inland, 13°C along the western coast, around 11°C in other coastal areas and 3°C in the higher mountains, where frost is expected to form locally.

Weather outlook improves

On Tuesday, conditions will remain partly cloudy with isolated showers expected after midday, mainly in mountainous and south-eastern areas.

Wednesday will see intervals of increased cloud cover, with a chance of isolated showers in the afternoon, primarily over the mountains. By Thursday, the weather will turn mostly clear.

Temperatures will rise slightly on Tuesday and increase noticeably by Thursday, returning to near seasonal averages.

At the time of the report’s issuance (05:00), snow depth at Chionistra stood at 14 centimetres.
