Heavy rain and thunderstorms on the way as warning takes effect

Date:

An orange weather warning will come into force at 7pm on Wednesday as a line of thunderstorms approaches the island, bringing heavy rain, possible hail and strong winds, according to the Meteorology Department.

Speaking to Protoselido, department spokesperson Andreas Chrysanthou said the first areas to be affected are expected to be in the southwest, where the strongest weather conditions may also occur.

Heavy rain, hail and strong winds expected

Localised rain and isolated thunderstorms are forecast from the afternoon, with some storms potentially becoming particularly intense and accompanied by hail.

Winds are also expected to strengthen and change direction, particularly in coastal areas. The combination of heavy rainfall, thunderstorms and strong winds could create difficult conditions across the island.

The orange weather warning will take effect at 7pm on Wednesday and remain in force until Thursday morning, Chrysanthou said.

Drivers urged to take care

Chrysanthou urged the public to remain alert, particularly on the roads while the warning is in effect.

Motorists should exercise caution during periods of heavy rain and thunderstorms, when driving conditions may deteriorate.

Storms to ease on Thursday morning

The first easing of the weather is expected on Thursday morning. However, isolated thunderstorms are forecast to continue at intervals on Thursday and Friday, although they are not expected to be as intense.
