Hantavirus: Couple who died had travelled to three countries

Date:

The Dutch couple who died from hantavirus had travelled for several months in Argentina, Chile and Uruguay before boarding the cruise ship MV Hondius, the Health Ministry in Buenos Aires announced today.

According to a press release from Argentina’s Health Ministry, work is under way to trace the movements of the Dutch passengers who developed the first symptoms of hantavirus while on board the cruise ship.

The ministry stressed that “it has not been confirmed that they were infected in Argentina”, adding that the Argentine section of Tierra del Fuego, from where the MV Hondius departed on 1 April, “has not reported a case of hantavirus since 1996, when mandatory case reporting was introduced”.
