Greek guard from ship reportedly held by Houthis

Date:

A Greek guard held by Houthis in Yemen is feared to be among 15 missing crew members after a deadly assault on the cargo vessel Eternity C in the Red Sea. The ship came under attack in two waves earlier this week, and sank following severe structural damage.

The Eternity C, sailing under the Liberian flag but with Greek-linked interests, was first targeted on Monday roughly 50 nautical miles off the coast of Hodeidah, Yemen. It was struck by sea drones and missiles before coming under direct assault by armed Houthi militants on fast boats the following evening. The ship’s lifeboats were destroyed, forcing the crew to abandon ship by leaping into the sea.

Among those feared captured is a Greek guard held by Houthis alongside the ship’s Filipino captain. Both men were reportedly the last to evacuate the vessel, choosing to stay aboard to help others escape. Eyewitness accounts from six rescued crew members confirm this timeline.

The attack resulted in four confirmed deaths, six rescues, and 15 individuals still missing- including the Greek national. The Houthis have taken responsibility, claiming the strike was an act of solidarity with Palestine. A military spokesman stated that some survivors were rescued and are receiving medical attention at a secure location, but provided no names or numbers.

One especially moving element is that the Greek guard’s brother is involved in the search. He is a member of the same British security company that provided protection for the vessel and is now part of the private team leading the recovery and rescue operation, risking his own life to find his sibling.

This marks the second time in 24 hours that a ship connected to Greek interests has been targeted in the region. The Magic Seas was struck earlier this week, further heightening concerns over shipping security in the Red Sea corridor.

Negotiations for the potential release of hostages are believed to be underway, though details remain scarce. For now, the fate of those missing- including the Greek guard held by Houthis- hangs in the balance.
