Athens pledges full support to Nicosia
Greece will actively contribute to Cyprus’ security during the ongoing regional crisis, Greek Defence Minister Nikos Dendias announced following a high-level security meeting in Athens.
According to Dendias, Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis held a phone conversation with Cyprus President Nikos Christodoulides, reaffirming Greece’s commitment to support the island’s defence.
Deployment of naval and air assets
Following a decision by Greece’s Government Council for Foreign Affairs and Defence (KYSEA), Athens is immediately dispatching:
- The frigate HS Kimon
- A second Greek frigate equipped with the Centaurus anti-drone system
- A pair of F-16 Fighting Falcon fighter jets to Cyprus
Dendias also confirmed he will travel to Cyprus alongside the Chief of the Hellenic National Defence General Staff to enhance operational coordination.
Unified Defence Doctrine reaffirmed
The move reinforces the longstanding “Unified Defence Doctrine” between Greece and Cyprus, especially after recent drone attacks targeting the British base at Akrotiri, reportedly involving Iranian-made Shahed drones.
Athens’ decision signals heightened military coordination between the two countries amid escalating tensions in the Eastern Mediterranean and wider Middle East region.
