GR Police aid in global takedown of major cybercrime platforms

Date:

The Hellenic Police participated in a global police operation to take down two of the largest cybercrime forums in the world, which was coordinated by Europol from 28 to 30 January.

The operation involved law enforcement authorities from 8 countries (Germany, United States, Greece, Spain, France, Romania, Italy, and Australia), with the main objective of identifying the operators and technical infrastructure of the platforms.

Both of these underground economy forums offered a quick entry point into the cybercrime scene. These sites worked as one-stop shops and were used not only for discussions on cybercrime but also as marketplaces for illegal goods and cybercrime-as-a-service, such as stolen data, malware, or hacking tools.

In total, 2 persons were arrested, 7 searches were carried out, and 17 servers, more than 50 electronic devices, and 300,000 euros in cash and cryptocurrencies were seized.

In Greece, following a European Search Warrant, a Greek man was identified, allegedly as a co-operator of one of the platforms. A search of his home yesterday resulted in the seizure of 6 bank cards, a laptop, 3 hard drives, and a mobile phone. The seized items will be sent to the relevant investigation office, while both platforms have now been taken out of service.
