A jewellery shop in Larnaca has reported a gold chain theft worth €10,000, after two individuals distracted the owner and stole from an unlocked display case.
According to police, the incident took place around 6 p.m. on Monday. A man and a woman entered the shop pretending to be customers. They purchased a religious icon worth €25, creating a sense of trust and distraction.
While the man engaged the shop owner in conversation, the woman allegedly opened a sliding display cabinet that had not been locked. She then stole several gold chains before the pair left the premises.
The shop owner noticed the theft after the suspects had gone and reported the incident to police. The case is now under investigation by Larnaca CID.
This gold chain theft in Cyprus is the latest in a series of distraction-based robberies targeting small businesses. Authorities have urged shop owners to keep display cases secured at all times, even during business hours.
