German FM: “We will be there if Cyprus needs us”

Date:

Diplomatic and security support pledged

Germany assured Cyprus of its support during a meeting between Foreign Minister Johann Wadephul and his Cypriot counterpart Konstantinos Kombos in Nicosia. Wadephul stressed that “if Cyprus truly needs us, we will be present,” reaffirming Germany’s commitment to the island amid escalating regional tensions.

Kombos highlighted the importance of Europe playing an active role in de-escalation through diplomacy, noting that Cyprus is “part of the solutions, not part of any problem.” He underlined the EU’s unified stance condemning unjustified attacks on Gulf partners and emphasised Cyprus’ strategic role as a hub for humanitarian operations and evacuations.

Crisis impacts and European responsibilities

Kombos noted that the crisis has “directly affected global stability,” impacting energy prices, shipping, and supply chains. He thanked countries that responded swiftly to support Cyprus’ defensive capabilities, adding that more than 99% of Cypriot citizens and residents previously trapped in danger zones have already returned home.

Wadephul described the recent Iranian drone attack on the British base at Akrotiri as evidence of a real threat from Tehran, including to Europe. He praised Cyprus’ measured response and reaffirmed Germany’s solidarity, calling Cyprus “a close and important partner” and a responsible host of EU Council Presidency duties.

Security measures and ongoing support

Kombos noted that Cyprus had strengthened its defensive capabilities proactively, following expert recommendations. Wadephul confirmed that Germany could add military resources if required, although the current European presence, including partners such as France and Italy, is sufficient for now.

The ministers agreed that regional security is a shared European responsibility, with Germany fully committed to EU mutual assistance under Article 42. Both highlighted the need to end the conflict promptly and create conditions for diplomatic dialogue, given the interconnected impacts on energy, maritime routes, and trade.

Bilateral cooperation and future alignment

Kombos and Wadephul discussed opportunities to expand cooperation in culture, education, and shipping. Both ministers reaffirmed alignment on supporting Ukraine and emphasised that Cyprus serves as a strategic bridge between Europe and the Middle East.
