Julien Stéphan departed from the Rennes bench last week following the team’s poor start in the French league, and yesterday the club management announced the hiring of Argentine coach Jorge Sampaoli. Used to being in the upper half of the table and competing for a European spot in recent years, Rennes currently sits only 13th, with 11 points after 11 matches. The 64-year-old Sampaoli, former manager of Marseille and Sevilla, has signed a two-year contract.
