Forestry Department installs animal rescue ramps in artificial lakes

Date:

The Forestry Department signed a contract on 15 June 2026 with the successful contractor for the construction and installation of 75 animal rescue ramps in artificial lakes across Cyprus.

According to an announcement by the Department, it will also be responsible for supervising and implementing the project, which is expected to be completed within the next two months.

Addressing repeated animal entrapment cases

The initiative is considered highly important, as incidents of wild and stray animals becoming trapped in artificial lakes are recorded every year.

In several cases, animals are unable to escape due to steep or slippery banks, leading to exhaustion and, in some instances, drowning.

Safer escape routes for wildlife

With the installation of the 75 ramps, safe escape routes will be created, significantly reducing animal losses and strengthening the protection of wildlife and biodiversity across Cyprus.

The value of the project amounts to €17,000, according to the Department.

Practical intervention for environmental protection

The Forestry Department said the project represents a practical and targeted intervention that transforms artificial lakes into safer environments for animals that may enter them.

Authorities added that the measure forms part of broader efforts to improve environmental protection and support biodiversity conservation.
