The Cyprus Forest Department issued a strict warning on Monday, reminding the public that unauthorized camping in state forests is illegal, punishable by up to one year imprisonment, a €5,000 fine, or both, under the Forests Law.
The department highlighted the increasing trend of illegal and uncontrolled camping, especially during the summer months, in environmentally sensitive areas such as the Akamas National Forest Park. These areas are protected due to their ecological value and biodiversity.
“Illegal camping causes pollution, environmental degradation, and disturbance to wildlife through littering and waste dumping,” the announcement stated.
It further highlights that a particularly alarming issue is the lighting of fires by illegal campers, which is strictly prohibited by law. This action endangers both the lives of the offenders and the forest resources, increasing the risk of catastrophic wildfires with unpredictable consequences.
The announcement emphasizes that lighting a fire anywhere in the countryside is forbidden, with the only exception being the preparation of food within specially arranged and permitted areas, located in organized picnic and camping sites.
Lighting a fire within state forests or at a distance of up to 2 kilometers from their boundaries constitutes an offence that, under the Forests (Amendment) Law of 2025, is punishable by up to 12 years in prison, a fine of up to €100,000, or both.
It is reminded that camping within state forests is only permitted in designated camping areas.
In case someone sees smoke or fire, they are urged to immediately call 1407 (Forest Department) or 112 (Fire Service), the announcement concludes.
