Foreign national succumbs after jumping from balcony to avoid arrest

Date:

A death has been confirmed after one of three foreign nationals who were injured during a police operation in Larnaca succumbed to his injuries.

The man had been hospitalised in critical condition after falling from the third floor of a residential building during an attempted escape from an immigration enforcement operation.

Attempt to flee during inspection

The incident took place on Wednesday morning during a coordinated operation by the Immigration and Aliens Service to check whether individuals were residing legally in Cyprus.

According to police, the operation included inspections across multiple apartment blocks, with several arrests already made before the fatal incident occurred.

During the checks, three individuals attempted to jump from upper floors after noticing police presence. The fall of one of the men resulted in what has now been confirmed as a death.

Police statement and investigation

Larnaca Police Director Ioannis Kapnoulas confirmed that the operation formed part of wider enforcement checks on residency status and illegal stay in the Republic.

He said it would be inappropriate to prejudge the actions of police officers involved, while expressing regret over the fatal outcome.

Authorities confirmed that a total of 22 arrests were made during the operation, including the three injured individuals.

Following the incident, the operation was immediately suspended so officers could assist with emergency response and first aid efforts.

Two others still in hospital

The two remaining injured men continue to receive treatment for orthopaedic injuries, with doctors describing their condition as serious but stable.

Kapnoulas expressed his condolences over the death and wished a full recovery for the other injured individuals.

Building under assessment

Authorities also addressed reports concerning the condition of the apartment building, noting that the Larnaca District Local Government Organisation has been informed and the property is currently under assessment.
