Foot-and-mouth disease cases rise to 108 units

Date:

New outbreaks confirmed in Athienou

The foot-and-mouth disease situation in Cyprus has worsened, with the Veterinary Services confirming three additional infected livestock units, bringing the total to 108 affected units across the island.

According to officials, the new cases have been identified in Athienou, while intensified sampling continues in affected areas of Nicosia and Larnaca. Authorities said the increase in confirmed cases was expected due to ongoing testing efforts.

Spread across livestock sectors

The latest data show the outbreak affects:

  • 13 cattle units (9 in Larnaca, 4 in Nicosia)
  • 92 sheep and goat units (67 in Larnaca, 25 in Nicosia)
  • 3 pig farms in western Nicosia

The foot-and-mouth disease outbreak now represents around 9.5% of the adult sheep and goat population, 2.8% of cattle, and approximately 7.89% of pigs.

Authorities also noted that the number of units testing negative within restricted zones is increasing alongside positive cases.

Culling and vaccination efforts continue

Culling operations are ongoing in both Nicosia and Larnaca, while vaccination programmes are progressing.

Veterinary Services reported that:

  • The second phase of cattle vaccination has reached 81%
  • Sheep and goat vaccination coverage stands at 64%
  • All pig units within restriction zones have received at least one dose, while four units in Larnaca have completed a second dose

Officials stressed that control measures remain active to limit further spread of the disease.

Special cases under evaluation

Authorities are also assessing cases involving infected “red cows” and fat-tailed sheep in Larnaca. Any exemptions will depend on genetic verification in cooperation with the Department of Agriculture, as well as risk assessments balancing preservation and containment.

EU measures extended

On 24 April 2026, the European Union extended existing restrictive measures related to foot-and-mouth disease until 15 June 2026. No additional restrictions were introduced, but the framework remains subject to regular review based on the epidemiological situation.
