Progress in livestock vaccinations across Cyprus
Cyprus has reached significant progress in vaccinating livestock against foot-and-mouth disease, with 85% of cattle and 45% of sheep immunised, according to Dr. Dimitris Epameinondas, President of the Cyprus Veterinary Association.
Regional vaccination updates
In the Famagusta district, all cattle in farms have been vaccinated, and over 60% of sheep and goats have received the vaccine. Dr. Epameinondas noted that the first vaccination dose in Larnaca has been completed. He added that Cyprus has around half a million sheep and goats and approximately 90,000 cattle across all livestock units.
Vaccination strategy and coverage
Dr. Epameinondas explained that coverage in the overall animal population may exceed 80%, as large livestock units and farms near pig holdings were prioritised. Pigs are particularly susceptible to foot-and-mouth disease and can amplify the virus rapidly if infected.
Efforts for pig vaccinations
Regarding vaccines for pigs, Dr. Epameinondas said that the Veterinary Services are working to obtain supplies from Germany, with delivery to Cyprus pending.
