The new Food Connect platform presented successfully: The first food donation application in Cyprus

The official presentation of the FoodConnect platform, the first food donation application in Cyprus, was successfully held on Thursday, March 26, 2026, at the St. Raphael Resort in Limassol.

The event marked an important milestone in the launch of an initiative that aims to radically change the way surplus food is managed.

Food Connect was created with the goal of providing a practical and immediate solution to a daily problem: food waste. Every year, millions of tons of food end up as waste. Food Connect aims to bridge this gap by making food distribution easier, supporting environmental sustainability, social solidarity, and the circular economy.

This project offers a practical, technology-driven solution while also promoting lasting change at both local and European levels.

During the event, the FoodConnect team presented in detail the vision and functionality of the application, and a live demonstration was carried out, both for businesses and for recipients. Particular emphasis was placed on the social and environmental impact of the initiative, which is also supported by official statistics from Eurostat. According to the data, Cyprus ranks among the countries with the highest levels of food waste per capita annually, with approximately 294 kilograms of food being discarded per person each year. These figures clearly highlight the importance and necessity of such a platform, which contributes significantly to reducing food waste and promoting sustainable food management.

Public participation was particularly encouraging, with representatives from businesses, organizations, and other stakeholders contributing to a lively and productive discussion. The strong interest and meaningful contributions confirmed the importance and potential of the project.

The Food Connect platform is a LIFE project that connects food donors with organizations and individuals in need or in search.

The project is co-funded by the European Union’s LIFE Programme (Project Number: 101148772).
FOOD CONNECT is coordinated by the DIAS Media Group, in collaboration with the NGOs Friends of the Earth Malta, Friends of the Earth Cyprus, the company Base Element in Cyprus, the NGO ZERO in Portugal, and the company INOVA+ Portugal.
