Hundreds of flamingos have returned to the Akrotiri Salt Lake following last week’s rainfall, the Akrotiri Environmental Education Centre announced.
According to the announcement, it is estimated that nearly 300 flamingos are now in the salt lake area, with their numbers increasing daily.
Each year, between October and February, flamingos flock to the salt lake to feed on brine shrimp and plankton. Many of them remain throughout the year if conditions remain favourable.
The Centre’s director, Dr Thomas Hadjikyriakou, expressed excitement at the return of the flamingos and encouraged birdwatchers to take advantage of the Centre’s facilities for the best experience.
He noted that the Centre is equipped with three telescopes overlooking the salt lake and can accommodate up to 100 visitors at a time.
However, Dr Hadjikyriakou warned visitors not to attempt to approach the flamingos or walk into the lake, as this could disturb their habitat.
