The body of a 57-year-old fisherman from Turkey’s Hatay province was discovered in occupied Kyrenia 12 days after he went missing at sea. Refik Sahiloglu, a resident of Samandag, had set out early on December 2 from Cevlik beach in Kapisuyu community aboard his boat to fish in the Mediterranean.
Hours later, another fisherman found the vessel empty and immediately alerted the Coast Guard. Turkish authorities launched a large-scale search and rescue operation involving Coast Guard forces and AFAD, but initial efforts yielded no results.
Body located after extensive search
After 12 days of searches, the missing fisherman’s body was located in the Karsiyaka area of Kyrenia in Cyprus’s occupied territories. Authorities conducted identification procedures and notified his family.
