First Christodoulides Erhürman meeting takes place

Date:

President Nikos Christodoulides and the new Turkish Cypriot leader, Tufan Erhürman, are holding their first Christodoulides Erhürman meeting this morning. The talks are set for 9:30am at the residence of the UN Secretary-General’s Special Representative, Hasim Diyen, in the Nicosia airport area.

Speaking on Tuesday, President Christodoulides expressed hope that the meeting will yield concrete positive results, specifically towards restarting negotiations from where they left off at Crans-Montana.

“I hope- and with this expectation I am going to the meeting- that we will have specific positive outcomes in the direction of resuming talks from the point they were suspended at Crans-Montana. This is the sole objective, and I am going there hoping for a response so that we can begin this major effort immediately,” he said.

“We are fully prepared, and I repeat, I hope there will be a response from the other side so that negotiations can begin as soon as possible,” he added.

The Christodoulides Erhürman meeting marks the first contact between the two leaders since Erhürman assumed his new role, and comes amid renewed efforts by the UN to revive the peace process.
