Fire breaks out in Limassol district, aerial units deployed

Date:

Firefighting forces were mobilised on Tuesday morning after a wildfire broke out near the village of Laneia in the Limassol district.

Strong firefighting units were deployed to the area, while assistance from aerial firefighting assets was requested.

The fire is burning vegetation consisting mainly of wild shrubs and other low vegetation, with scattered trees also affected.

Weather conditions complicate firefighting efforts

Meteorologist Eric Kitas said that fire weather conditions in the area are challenging, with humidity levels around 30% and winds reaching 3 to 4 Beaufort.

He explained that the fire is moving uphill due to the terrain and wind conditions, which are contributing to faster spread.

According to Kitas, the conditions are favourable for spot fires to develop up to 100-200 metres ahead of the main fire front, increasing the speed of expansion.

Authorities continue operations

Firefighting crews remain at the scene, with efforts focused on containing the blaze and preventing further spread.

Updates are expected as the operation continues.
