Finland: 27-year-old charged over abuse of 361 children via social media

Date:

A major abuse case has emerged in which a 27-year-old man is facing charges linked to the alleged sexual exploitation of hundreds of children through social media platforms.

Authorities say the offences involved victims aged between 9 and 15 at the time, with incidents reported between 2019 and 2022.

Police investigation revealed extensive material

Finnish police launched an investigation after discovering thousands of images and videos on the suspect’s mobile phone in 2022 during a separate criminal inquiry.

The material allegedly involved children who were contacted through social media, where they were asked to send images and videos of an inappropriate nature and, in some cases, encouraged to perform exploitative acts.

The suspect is also accused of distributing illegal material involving child sexual exploitation.

Hundreds of charges under examination

Investigators initially suspected the man of committing 364 offences. However, prosecutors have decided not to pursue charges in three of those cases.

The remaining allegations form the core of the abuse case in Finland, which authorities describe as one of the most extensive of its kind involving online exploitation.

Partial admission and upcoming trial

The accused has partially admitted to some of the actions during the investigation, according to authorities.

The man is facing charges of aggravated sexual offences against children and distribution of illegal content involving minors.

His trial is scheduled to begin in September.

Authorities highlight online safety concerns

Officials say the case highlights ongoing risks related to social media platforms, where perpetrators may attempt to contact minors and request inappropriate material.

The investigation remains ongoing as authorities continue to assess the full scope of the alleged offences linked to the case.
