The trip comes after representatives from Russia and Ukraine met earlier this month in Istanbul for talks over a potential ceasefire in the conflict. The meeting did not lead to substantial progress for the resolution of the hostilities but did strike a deal on a large prisoners-of-war exchange.

The POW swap started on Friday and was due to continue Saturday and Sunday.

Fidan is expected to meet with Russian President Vladimir Putin and Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov during his visit. Fidan plans to stress Turkey’s commitment to “achieving a fair and lasting peace in the Russia-Ukraine war,” the state-run news agency Anadolu reported on Saturday.

Fidan will reiterate that Turkey “is ready to do its part as a facilitator in the negotiations,” but he will also discuss other regional and international issues, “including Syria, Gaza and the South Caucasus,” Anadolu added.

Fidan will also meet with other high-level Russian officials, including Vice President Vladimir Medinsky and Defense Minister Andrey Belousov.
