Turkish Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan declared on Tuesday that “achieving the position the TRNC deserves in the international community and lifting the inhumane embargo imposed on Turkish Cypriots remain among our main priorities”.
Speaking during the state budget debate in the Turkish Grand National Assembly, Fidan said Turkey will continue “with determination” the steps it considers necessary to protect its rights and interests in the Eastern Mediterranean, insisting on the principle of “fair sharing” of maritime zones.
“In the Eastern Mediterranean we defend the principle of fair sharing and proceed with determination on steps concerning the protection of our rights and interests,” he stated.
On the Aegean, Fidan argued that all pending issues must be examined as a whole and resolved through substantive dialogue within the framework of international law and good neighbourly relations.
He added that Ankara’s goal is to shape an Aegean and Eastern Mediterranean of stability and prosperity.
Fidan also reiterated Turkey’s intention to pursue a “positive agenda” with Greece and said initiatives concerning the Muslim minority in Western Thrace “will continue whenever necessary”.
