Two minors, aged 16 and 7, have returned to Cyprus after spending six months in Syria, following what authorities describe as a cross-border child abduction case.
The children were initially taken on a short trip to Saudi Arabia, but were later kept in Syria. They returned to Cyprus on Monday, bringing the case to an end, according to police reports.
Father arrested at Larnaca airport
A 45-year-old man was arrested at Larnaca Airport upon arrival in Cyprus, as he was wanted in connection with the alleged unlawful detention of the children abroad.
He was later brought before the court, which ordered his detention for three days to facilitate investigations.
The children were first received by officials from Hope For Children and subsequently handed over to their mother.
Travel agreement and disputed claims
According to police, the father claimed he had written authorisation from the children’s estranged mother to travel with them from 21 to 29 December 2025.
He stated that the trip began in Saudi Arabia via Jordan, but he later decided to travel to Syria via Lebanon so the children could visit his place of origin.
He also admitted that he did not inform the mother of the change in travel plans, saying he feared disagreement and conflict.
Allegations over extended stay in Syria
The mother has alleged that when the children were due to return to Cyprus, they were instead taken from Saudi Arabia to Syria, where they remained in a relative’s home.
During their stay, the children reportedly maintained contact with their mother and asked her to help bring them back to Cyprus, expressing fear over their father’s behaviour.
Police investigation continues
Following a complaint filed with the Limassol CID in January 2026, police contacted the suspect via an online application.
During this communication, the man allegedly stated that he intended to return to Cyprus without the children, as he planned to leave them in Syria.
Authorities continue to investigate the circumstances surrounding the case.
